Recovery from Addiction

Since 2005, McDowell Center’s Dual Diagnosis Program has offered hope to families whose children are struggling with both a psychiatric disorder and a diagnosed intellectual disability (IQs of 60 to 70). This combination of issues can cause unique problems for youth at home and school. The 8-bed program offers dedicated attention to this specialized population, providing them with the coping skills they need to return to school, home, and the community while also treating the specifics of their mental health issues therapy and specialized behavior modification programming. Residents of the program are housed in a separate unit with smaller classrooms and living areas to provide the structured, therapeutic environment.

Our specialty program for these young men is notable for its staff-to-resident ratio, which allows us to provide individualized care. The program is providing specialized staff that been trained to work with students with intellectual disabilities or may be on the autism spectrum. We work with families, providers, and any referring sources to meet the needs prescribed in 504 Plans or Individualized Education Plans (IEP).
