Psychiatric Treatment for Young Males

Portrait of young boy
The mental health program at McDowell Center provides treatment for young men struggling with psychiatric and behavioral issues that cannot be managed at home or in a typical inpatient setting. Our residential program offers long term care for serious problems, such as severe depression and anxiety, significant trauma as a result of abuse or neglect, attention deficit disorder, self-harm, sexually reactive behavior, and other mental health disorders. Residents also come to us after experiencing significant life changes, such as abandonment, loss, new family structures or foster care placements, which can sometimes result in deep grief, truancy, defiance and other issues with authority.

Our mental health program provides our residents with the skills they need to improve their mental health long term. Through a mix of individual, group, and recreation therapy, residents focus on anger and stress management, dealing with environmental triggers and negative peer pressures, developing healthy coping skills and finding therapeutic outlets for frustration and anxiety. Our treatment team of licensed psychiatrists, nurses, counselors and therapists are dedicated to providing our residents with a better path forward. When possible, our treatment team will work to schedule family counseling sessions to make sure parents and guardians can be apart of the treatment process. Family participation helps ensure that treatment and care can continue once a patient has been discharged.
